Virtual patient

Learning through playing. Play to learn.

Our Virtual patient platform brings gamified medical case studies created by experienced physicians, available to the professional community. The Virtual patient is an interactive simulation of a real clinical situation, serving to educate both current and future healthcare professionals. This form of “serious gaming” successfully complements traditional learning methods worldwide.

Gamification in medical education

Gamification helps develop specific skills such as clinical reasoning, decision-making, and critical thinking. The integration of these computer simulations has been repeatedly rated as highly beneficial for both students and educators.

At IBA, we champion this educational approach and believe in its educational power, which is why we have developed a web application for playing, presenting, and entering linear virtual scenarios. The application allows for the addition of optional questions and includes a scoring counter, thus expanding the possibilities of online education for both young and experienced doctors. The application is simple, universal, and, with minimal distractions, allows for complete focus on the storyline, content, and educational area of the case studies.

System description

Simple and user-friendly virtual scenario editing

The application allows easy management and modification of virtual scenarios, including their creation and updates, ensuring flexibility in enhancing or adapting them to current educational needs or changes in medical practices.

Wide multimedia integration options

The application enables easy integration of various multimedia files such as images, videos, audio recordings, and documents, enriching the scenarios and increasing the educational value of the studied topic.

Simulation progress tracking

The application automatically records both correct and incorrect steps taken during the simulation, providing valuable feedback for instructors and scenario analysis.

Certification for completing virtual patient simulation

After successfully completing the simulation, the system offers the option to receive an official certificate confirming the completion of the simulation, including the results achieved.

Evolving learning experience

The system tracks the time spent in each node of the simulation, allowing tutors to analyze and adapt scenarios to focus on problematic areas and improve the learning process. Agile development within our team enables quick and effective implementation of software changes, co-created by the people who use the tool every day.

Widening Access to Virtual Educational Scenarios

The WAVES project (2016-2018) funded by the European Commission facilitated access to virtual scenarios and patients by integrating their systems with mainstream educational platforms. It also created a popular online course (MOOC) that attracted over 4,000 educators.
